Organizational Setting and Work Relationships

The incumbent is responsible for maintenance, repair, overhaul, and rebuilding of diesel generators and other electrical appliances within the premises of UNHCR. S/he is also expected to apply and ensure adherence to safety programs related to the safe operation of air-conditioning and refrigeration installations, electrical systems, generating sets, or power tools and equipment of the building and maintenance trade. Identify resource requirements for his/her area of responsibility in connection with budget preparations.

All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. Duties

  1. Install, service, maintain, and repair, in compliance with recognized standards and regulations pertaining to safety and installation codes, generating sets.
  2. Diagnose technical faults and carry-out remedy for malfunctioning or defective generators, including installations.
  3. Operate a wide variety of tools and power equipment including saws, drills, common workshop machinery, voltage testers, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, welding/soldering equipment, and other tools and equipment.
  4. Perform diagnostics and preventive maintenance of generators and other electronic appliances.
  5. Perform technical or other assessments of electronic equipment or buildings and prepare technical or other reports.
  6. Apply and ensure adherence to safety programs related to the safe operation of electronic equipment or power tools and equipment of UNHCR building and other structures.
  7. Review and recommend for improvement of UNHCR structures and assign day-to-day repair and maintenance tasks to maintenance assistants.
  8. Inspect and report on maintenance work carried out either by contractors and ensure proper utilization of available resources.
  9. Read and interpret specifications and technical drawings, schedules, manuals for construction projects, installations, and upgrade repair of infrastructure.
  10. On-call basis respond to maintenance issues faced by staff members of UNHCR related to generator or other electronic equipment and structures.
  11. Resolve problems; inspect quality of work and work performance.
  12. Train co-workers to perform preventive maintenance, produce monthly reports, and repair equipment.
  13. Carry out the physical inventory check.
  14. Inspect, test, evaluate, calibrate, and update generator systems and wiring to improve reliability and to assure dependability and safety and compliance.
  15. Work out maintenance schedules and follow up maintenance on the electrical installations.
  16. Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Professional Work Experience

  • For G6 – 3 years relevant experience with High School Diploma; or 2 years relevant work experience with a Bachelor or equivalent or higher

Relevant Job Experience

  • Essential: Experience in Generator Mechanic/Electrician/Maintenance Administrator role. Minimum three years of direct work experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of generators. Experienced and competent in the use of mechanical tools pertaining to maintenance of generators. Demonstrable ability to work with a multi-national workforce.
  • Desirable: Experience in UN and INGO environment

Functional Skills

  • GB-Electrical equipment installation and maintenance

Language Requirements

  • For International Professional and Field Service jobs: Knowledge of English and UN working language of the duty station if not English.
  • For National Professional jobs: Knowledge of English and UN working language of the duty station if not English and local language.
  • For General Service jobs: Knowledge of English and/or UN working language of the duty station if not English.
